Pedestals Can Be Used to Display Your Sculptures

Article by Allaric Saltzman

Sculptures are different from paintings in a way that they are three-dimensional while paintings are just two-dimensional. Due to this three-dimensional nature, there are multiple viewing heights and viewing angles involved. Now, in case of busts it is very easy to determine the viewing angle. But, in case of other artistic sculptures, one needs to decide the best viewing height and viewing angle by placing the sculpture on different surfaces and viewing it from different angles. The best way of going about with this is that you need to place yourself in the sculptor’s place and imagine how he would have visualized the sculpture.

Sculpture pedestals are useful for displaying your sculpture collection. Now, the thumb rule when selecting a sculpture pedestal is that the pedestal should not be more artistic than the sculpture you are planning to display. Usually, there are complimentary pairs, i.e., bronze will look good on a stone pedestal, typically limestone, and glass sculptures look good on wood. Experimenting with different materials with different sculptures will enable you to get the right combination. Another thing that should be kept in mind is that the pedestal should be large enough to support the artwork that you are planning to display. The sculpture should not over-hang from the surface of the pedestal. This can be quite dangerous, as a slight nudge will may cause your valuable piece of art to come crashing down and shatter into pieces. The sculpture and the pedestal should be firmly secured to one another as well as to the ground for fear of tipping over at the slightest of touches.

Now, although it is a sculpture pedestal, it can also be used to display other objects as well. Often, people use sculpture pedestals for displaying potted plants. For this, highly artistic pedestals with carvings and engravings are frequently used. Pedestals are also used to display antique or sometimes even modern vases, statues and other artifacts. Sometimes, these pedestals are used to place telephones as well.

Sculpture pedestals are made out of a number of materials. Wooden pedestals are made out of teak wood and are quite popular. Apart from this, chiseled stone column pedestals that are made out of limestone are equally accepted. Other materials used to make pedestals are steel, marble, black stone and granite. The pedestals often feature mirror paneling and carvings or engravings.

One can find a large variety of pedestals in specialized stores that deal in art accessories. You can even search online to get a whole variety of different pedestals sold by multiple dealers and select the one that satisfies your needs.
